It was raining in the Bay Area and a big storm was forecast to come in
on the weekend. It was just starting to sprinkle as we left around 3:15pm.
Our goal for the day was to drive to Bakersfield and spend the night there. I
chose Bakersfield because it's about halfway between the Bay Area and Death
Valley, which is a bit too long for most people to drive in one day. It
can be done, but if you don't leave early in the morning you'll end up pitching your
tent in the dark. We've done that a few times, but I had no desire to do that with
two kids.
So we headed down 101 to 152, then turned onto I-5 south. I chose this route rather
than Altamont Pass because I figured we'd avoid traffic more this way. We didn't run
into much traffic and arrived in Bakersfield after about 4 hours, 15 minutes of driving.
It rained for much of the last hour or two.
