Fly to Salt Lake City

I'd actually been to Yellowstone and Grand Teton before, but it was a long time ago -- about 30 years ago. I don't have any vivid memories of that trip, although I have scanned in a few old pictures. My parents took me and my sister for about a 2-week trip, if I recall, flying into Salt Lake City and driving up to the two parks.

This time, I would be the parent with the two kids, and we'd be flying into Salt Lake City and driving from there. I'll tell you right now, there were no a-ha moments on this trip, where I recalled being there 30 years earlier. But it was interesting looking back at the old pictures and comparing them. Not all that much has changed in some respects, although the two trips were separated by the great Yellowstone fires of 1988. But more on that later.

Today, we flew from the Bay Area to Salt Lake City, arriving around 4pm. After picking up our rental car, we checked into the hotel and dropped off our stuff. Then we drove to the closest REI. We had already shipped most of our camping gear on Saturday to the hotel (it arrived on Wednesday, a couple days before our arrival). However, we still needed to buy stove fuel and a few other supplies.

After our little shopping spree, we had dinner and returned to our hotel, resting up for the long drive the next day.
