Comments: Badass website!!! I use it a lot to look up hikes both locally and far away. Your "on the trail" insight is very useful, and it's awesome how you record what you do. Keep it up!

Comments: Congratulations on an excellent website. I must, however, come to the defense of poor Bathtub Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park, which you savaged in your review. First point: The reason people swim in Bathtub Lake, and not nearby Butte Lake, is because Bathtub's water temperature is several degrees warmer. Second point: You wondered how the people you observed swimming on the opposite (north) shore of the lake could stand it, as you (alone on the south shore) were experiencing mud bottom and shallow water. Answer: The beach on the north side is a sandy beach that slopes into the lake, getting over your head in about 5 yards from the shore. That's why everyone (except you) was on the north shore. But, you're right about a couple of things: the NPS prescribed burn removed most of the shade. Also, the first Bathtub Lake is a working lake, i.e., its popularity is due to its providing a swimming spot for hikers and campers in the Butte Lake area, and cannot compete as scenic "alpine lake", an category in which you found it "disappointing".

Comments: Hello, Kevin! I am a 20-year-old from Shanghai, China. My family went to Canada for traveling on Aug.20 through Aug.31. It is a happy trip. Especially when I saw your page to Bow Glacier Falls (****kevingong****Hiking/200907BowGlacierFalls.html), because we went through it for 3 and a half hours. When I see the photos attached in the page, I feel proud. Overall, I like Canada. However, since we only spent 3 days in Banff, Lake Louise and Columbia Icefield, we can't enjoy ourselves to the full. So I'm looking forward to coming to Canada again! Your website is excellent. And welcome to Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo (May 1-October 31)!

Comments: Kevin, I just saw that you visited Heart Lake in Little Lakes Valley just South of Rock Creek Lake. That spot has been my favorite destination for over 20 years. You should have given it a 10 rating, I don't see how hikes can get any better than that one; minimum effort and maximum scenery. If you ever are in that neighborhood again, you really should hike past Long Lake and go up to the Gem Lakes - it is beautiful there! Well worth the hike, but the trail does have longer stretches of steep trail after Long Lake. Gem Lakes is roughly a 7-8 mile round trip from the trail head. David.

Comments: Hi Kevin. Your site is great. I grew up in the Bay Area and have been hiking/backpacking/camping since I was a kid. We share a lot of common destinations, including NZ. The Routeburn was a highlight of mine. I discovered Highland Lakes through your site. Thanks. One area you appear not to have visited is Hawaii. Go to Kauai. Weeks of incredible hikes. Haven't had a bad one yet! In terms of hiking, the other islands don't compare (well, except for Haleakala crater). Thanks again for all your time dedicated to this site.

Comments: Hi Kevin! Thanks for sharing your hiking experiences! I'll be heading out to visit my son in San Jose in Mi-August.We'll be hiking the Rae Lakes loop, planning on taking 4 days to do it. My son has done it a couple of times and tells me its far more spectacular than our White Mountain hikes back here, in New Hampshire. You gave some great tips on what to expect with weather and clothing - I particularly appreciate the going clock-wise comment, hadn't discussd that with Chris, yet. The pictures have gotten me even more excited for my "Big Adventure"! Can't wait!!

Comments: With regard to your Sierra Buttes hike, please don't hate 4-wheelers. They love the mountains too. They are not cheaters. They just chose another mode of transport. Also, like me, they may be physically unable to hike 10 miles. This limitation would make visiting the beauty impossible if not for the 4wd trails. It is unfortunate that more and more of these roads are being closed. Now, I cannot visit these places any more. It is also unfortunate hikers have this attitude, because we have so much in common.

Comments: Hi Kevin & Jean, I am so amazed & mesmerised when I looked at all your beautiful photos taken. In fact, they are awesome great! Then I interrupted my 2 young daughters from their chess game & exhorted your pictures asking them to emulate your photos. We are going to Queenstown coming end May & going to be our first time experiencing winter there especially for a ski vacation. So I need to see the surroundings of Queenstown during winter. I bounced on your pictures. Bravo & kudos, you have good taste & good shots. Thanks very much. Not forgetting I enjoy reading your reports too, very much indeed!

Comments: I read your Mount Diablo hike entry with interest. Personally, I much prefer the steeper, more direct route to the summit from Mitchell Canyon, ascending Back Creek to Bald Ridge, then descending from the summit via Juniper to Deer Flat and Mitchell Canyon fire road. Note that one mile of Back Creek *averages* 22.7% grade :-)
