2022 Eastern Sierra Trip

Day 5 of 5

Monday, August 1st
Drive home

Thunderstorms were forecast to start around 11am, so we left around 8:45am. I considered trying to drive through Yosemite, but reservations are required, and there's usually a wait at the entrance gate which causes delays. Also, I didn't bother to check on the status of the two fires in/near the park. I figured we'd just stick to Sonora Pass Road (the same way we came). After a brief stop in Bridgeport, we got up and over Sonora Pass without any rain.

One disadvantage to driving on a weekday (Monday) was that road work crews were out in force. There were several stoppages along the way, though most of them were brief except for a 15 minute stop just before Strawberry. But even with that, a stop for lunch in Oakdale, and a brief stop at a farm stand, we made it back to the Bay Area around 3:30pm.

I don't know how much rain actually fell in the Sabrina Lake area (where we probably would have done our hike) that day, but it felt best to play it safe. We saw reports of road closures, but those were further south. In any case, we saw most of what we came for, so no regrets cutting it a day short.
